You may be the only woman on the team, but you are as qualified as the men on your team. Do not forget that! You have made it this far for a reason and there is no reason why you cannot lead. So when you are asked to lead, remember that you are just as qualified as your male counterparts.

Just because construction is an industry dominated by men does not mean you should be apprehensive when giving directions or supervising your own team. If anything, this should encourage you even more because now they know they can trust you with their projects and they will appreciate your expertise even more.

One of the most important things you can do for your construction career is to speak up.

If you want to work on a project, tell your supervisor or team leader. If you want to lead a team, let them know that too. Do you need different equipment? Let them know! If you believe it is time for a raise, talk to them about that too.

There is never going to be a perfect time to ask and it can be super intimidating. However, building a construction career involves developing your confidence. Sticking up for yourself, especially in the male-dominated industry, demonstrates to your superiors that you know your worth, are assured of your skills and industry knowledge and are serious about your career. If you are indeed as productive as you think, then your employer will seriously consider your request!
